My campaign launch was as good as it could be. Twenty Eight people came out, including The-Frances Bula. Allan De Genova and Andrea Reimer introduced me, I spoke, we ate lots of cake! Frances wrote about it on her blog.

Geoff is a former employee of the City Of Vancouver, he worked closely with Larry Campbell from 2002-2005. Geoff is now running for nomination to Vision Vancouver. For the five years that I have known Sarah Blyth I have been so very impressed by her tireless drive.
She has volunteered her efforts towards the support of the Vancouver skateboard community, with passion, and enthusiasm never looking for credit or thanks.
She is a marker of soul with in our community that is not only appreciated, but much respected.
To say that I was happy to hear that she was running for parks board would be an understatement. Not only do I believe that she will be a great reprehensive for the skateboard / BMX community, truly feel that Sarah will be a huge asset with connection between the youth of Vancouver and the city. CKNW Fill-in Host Mike Smyth Mocks Skateboarding Community; Overlooks Skateboarder’s History in Vancouver

During an interview with Bill Cunningham, Brad Zubyk, and Doug MacArthur about the upcoming Vision Vancouver Mayoral Nomination campaign, Journalist Mike Smyth made comments regarding Allan De Genova’s skateboarder supporter base that expressed an attitude of skateboarders that discounts their achievements. Laughing at the idea that skateboarders could be organized enough to have an influence in a campaign, or even a vote, he demonstrated his ignorance of the body of skateboarders, both in terms of who they are, and what they are capable of. There is no truth in this idea. Skateboarders are writers, photographers, filmmakers, lawyers, city planners, students, and mothers, to name only a few of the alternative titles they can hold. Over the past 10 years, Vancouver’s skateboarders have worked with municipal government officials to build 5 skateboard parks, including world famous Hastings Bowl. Skateboarders have been breaking down barriers for the past decade, and it is both surprising and disappointing that a public personality would forward an archaic and utterly incorrect idea about us. Vancouverites are remarkably open minded and have progressed beyond this view, as almost every single individual has a friend or family member who enjoys skateboarding, or they themselves partake in this environmentally friendly and health activity.

Youth Radio Show - Ray Cam

The youth at Ray Cam Community Centre have a Vancouver youth radio show and they invited Allan De Genova, Mellissa De Genova and I to do a video/radio interview. It was great, they asked us some hard questions. We talked about skateboarding, BMX, Graffiti and other cool stuff. My son Sebastian who is four sat on my lap the whole time, bribed with candy and a future trip to Toys R Us and he did not make a peep. What a great experience. What a great Community Centre.

Women in National Parliaments - World

Here is the situation for Canadian women in parliament as of April, 2008

Canada is 49th out of 188 country's world wide that have been documented by the International Parliamentary Union. We sit at 21.3% elected woman. Boooooo!

Here are some country's that sit before us.

#1 is Rwanda at 48%

#21 is Peru at 29.2 %

#26 is Afghanistan at 27.7 %

#29 is Australia at 26%

What do we do to improve this? Christy Clark thinks political party's should put aside a % of seats for women. I agree. I also think it would be a good idea for other minorities.

My 1st day at campaign school was amazing. At times I could not believe I was in the same room with such passionate, remarkable women.

Our 1st day went like this....

Introduction from Jennifer Sweeny and Penny Priddy.

Next came the ABC's of Government with Linda Ried

After that we were put in to groups by Andrea Riemer and given a briefing on how to give a mock campaign. Candidate, campaign managers and everything else and we have the next three days to pull it off. Wish us luck we will need it. What's even more interesting, is that one of the women in my group is working on Greggor Robertson's campaign and another is a school trustee with the NPA. OOOOh it's so exiting!

Next came - A day in the life as a political panel. (I will expand on this later I promise!)

Media workshop. This was a highlight for sure. We worked in our mock campaign groups and prepped our mock candidate with their nomination speech. Woman members of the media Carolyn Jack and Anna Lilly along with Andrea Reimer judged them and then asked the hard questions. Very funny and a little scary at the same time.

Making the Decision to Run with Penny Priddy. I didnt know this til now but I love Penny Priddy!

I know I am missing stuff. I am really tired right now.

Last night, I went to Joy Macfail's house for the opening of Woman's campaign school. Andrea Riemer hosted the event. Lots of wine, women and political talk. Many women were working on campaigns for the municipal election. It is a really exiting time for municipal politics in Vancouver. A few lady's mentioned that no woman is running for mayor of Vancouver. But I later remembered Betty Krawczyk is running. Go Betty! This election will be pretty brutal, I understand why many woman would not want to deal with everything that comes with it. Another woman mentioned that in parts of India, If I remember correctly, 30% of council has to be women. Interesting.

After that, I headed over to Allan De Genova's mayoral campaign office to stuff envelopes. I have been volunteering for Allan's campaign, very exiting stuff. Al is a dynamo of a human being and I really hope he wins.

Now it's time for me to head off to campaign school. I couldn't sleep last night, I was so exited about it.

Beyond Robson is great. I especially like their Morning Brew by Sean Orr+Jon. It's the first thing I read when I get my butt out of bed. They always get to the good headlines before anyone else,
if you love Francis Bula as I do. She has a really good political Blog with juicy tid-bits. I also read David Eby's blog every single day. David shares his thoughts on the 2010 Olympics, Vancouver, homelessness, Olympic traffic lanes, housing and other city happenings. Very cool guy.

I am running for nomination to Vision Vancouver's parks board slate. I have worked and volunteered with many successful advocacy groups over the years. I have a good understanding of how the city functions, the issues and I know how to get things done.

I have started this blog for women that are interested in politics and want to to find out what it is like to run in a municipal election. So far, it has been very interesting.

This Thursday I am starting Women's Campaign School. On our first night we will be going to a reception at the home of Joy MacPhail. Very exiting.
